HRT phone screen done, no idea how I did
Just wrapped up my HRT phone screen for the Algo Dev track and honestly still processing how it went.
Going in I expected mostly trivia questions since that's what I'd read about prepping for quant adjacent roles, but it was straight into a coding problem, no warmup, no resume chat. The interviewer just described it out loud too, no shared doc, so I was scrambling to write down the setup while he talked. It was the watcher problem, players moving right on a 1D line while a watcher moves left and blocks anyone it's looking at, and I had to count how many reach the end by a given time. I brute forced the simulation and got most of it working, but he asked a follow up about the continuous version with no fixed timesteps and I only got partway through explaining the idea before we ran out of time.
I have five YOE coming from a more traditional backend background so the simulation style problem threw me off a bit, not what I expected from a trading firm honestly. Anyone know how strict they are about getting the full follow up done in a phone screen, or is partial credit realistic here? Trying to gauge if I should expect a reject or if there's still a shot.

Partial credit is realistic from what I've seen, they seem to care more about the approach.
Yeah I got a pending after a partial follow up too so there's hope.
Expected trivia going in too, wild how consistent that surprise is across posts.
Watcher problem is brutal to explain verbally without a shared doc, that part alone would throw me.
Same experience here, had to stop him twice to repeat the timestamps.
good luck, hope it works out
when did u do this interview?
