Waymo Data Fluency round is basically un-prepable, and it cost me the offer
Just wrapped up the full VO loop with Waymo and got the reject email today. Honestly should've seen it coming after that Data Fluency round.
Coding round was a graph problem, shortest path on a grid with obstacles, standard BFS stuff, felt fine there. System design was evaluating a self driving model, super open ended, no fixed answer, just had to keep asking clarifying questions and hope I was hitting the points the interviewer cared about that day.
Then Data Fluency happened. They wanted me to design a statistical experiment comparing two versions of something, no domain given upfront, and I just froze. There's basically nothing out there to prep for this round specifically, everyone online says the same thing, and I get why now. Rambled through some half baked A/B testing framework and could tell the interviewer wasn't buying it.
Last round was supposed to be TL, behavioral basically, except instead of asking about my past projects like every other company does, they gave me a made up scenario and wanted to know how I'd handle it on the spot. I had prepped a bunch of STAR stories for nothing.
Got the auto reject a few days later, no real feedback, just the standard template email. Their online reputation is not that hard but that's clearly not the whole story once you hit that data round.
Back to grinding I guess. Anyone actually found decent prep material for the data fluency stuff or is it just a lost cause every time?

the TL hypothetical thing got me too, wasted so much prep on star stories
same, felt like such a waste looking back
rough, sorry man
did they tell you it was data fluency beforehand or just spring it on you
recruiter mentioned it vaguely but gave zero detail on what to expect
data fluency is genuinely the worst designed round I've seen at any faang adjacent company
Man, that is brutal. Getting blindsided by an unconventional format after crushing the coding and surviving a vague system design round is the worst feeling, and freezing up there is completely understandable. I’m actually prepping for my own Waymo loop right now, and hearing how obscure that Data Fluency and behavioral round got is definitely sobering. Getting all the way to the end of their VO proves your baseline is elite, even if that curveball cost you this one. Take a couple of days to decompress and reset—you've got the chops to land the next one.
