Finally done with Pinterest's MLE loop, one of the harder processes I've done

For some background, I'm 6 YOE, coming from a solid ML background but honestly my LC game isn't the strongest, so I went into this a little nervous.

Phone screen was three parts back to back. First a deep dive on a project I led, and the interviewer really wanted to know how I measured business impact, not just the modeling side. Then ML theory, regularization, bias variance tradeoff, where gradient vanishing actually happens in a network. Then coding, felt rushed honestly.

Onsite was two coding rounds, both LC Hard level, and I definitely felt the gap between my ML background and my algorithm background. Then two ML system design rounds, one was basically a recommender system end to end, candidate generation through ranking through serving. The other pushed hard on how I'd handle a cold start scenario. Behavioral was mostly XFN collaboration stuff.

Still waiting to hear back and honestly no idea which way this goes. Anyone else feel like the MLE coding bar here is way higher than people expect going in?

did they tell you which team you'd be on? curious if it's the ads track since you mentioned cold start

the two LC hards back to back onsite is rough, happened to me too and I definitely underestimated it

yeah the business impact framing on the project deep dive caught me off guard too, felt more like a PM interview for a few minutes

same, wish someone had warned me about that going in
