Testing raw skill without tools isn't crazy though, they probably want to see if you understand the fundamentals not just how to prompt something.

Sure but then why build a product that argues the opposite for everyone else's workflow. Feels inconsistent.

Maybe it's on purpose, they don't want candidates leaning on the same tool they're trying to protect.

That's fair, still feels like a weird gap between what they sell and how they hire though.

Had a similar phone screen last month, no assistance allowed, just PIL and multiprocessing docs open in another tab.
