Capital One SWE phone screen - rejected after passing OA

Passed the OA with a clean score. Phone screen scheduled about 10 days later.

45 minutes: system design plus behavioral. SD was a payment processing system. They expected depth on idempotency and retry logic that I hadn't prepped for specifically. Covered the basics but not deep enough on failure handling and exactly-once semantics. Behavioral was conflict resolution and a time I reversed course based on feedback. Both felt okay.

Feedback 5 days later: "not a strong enough match for current needs." No specifics.

The OA was the most approachable part of the process. The phone screen raised the bar significantly. If you're going through Capital One for a backend role, prep distributed systems and financial transaction handling more than you'd expect for a company at this level.
