Anecdotally this seems way more common since the hiring slowdown started. Every friend group chat has one of these stories now.

Sometimes recruiters genuinely don't know until legal or finance freezes the req. Not always malicious, just a bad communication chain.

Maybe, but a two line templated email costs nothing even if the news is bad.

This happened to me at a fintech startup last year. Recruiter went quiet for a month then said role got cut. At least DoorDash admitted it eventually.

Same at a logistics company. Chased for weeks and finally got "position on hold indefinitely" which is corporate for never.

Yeah this needs to stop. At minimum send an auto reply saying the role is paused.
