where are displaced engineers supposed to go? 'AI skills' is vague enough to mean anything. most companies are claiming to only want it and not hiring for it in practice

I'm at Intuit. the affected teams weren't people who 'couldn't handle AI.' most were strong performers in stable teams that weren't exciting enough for the investor narrative

this is what gets me. the framing implies the people being cut weren't good enough for the future. usually that's not the story at all

the Meta/GM/Intuit/Microsoft pattern is being done in waves so no single announcement is too large to generate backlash. smart for them, terrible for the people in it
