The people-in-the-middle-leave thing is accurate. That's the pattern at most HFTs. The true believers stay, the burned out leave, and the honest assessments never make it out.
Out of curiosity, was it sustainable for a year or does the pressure start immediately?
First few months are the exciting phase. It starts showing after that when the new problems become routine problems and the hours don't change.
